Mahjong Solitaire

A quiet tile-matching puzzle for one: spot two identical free tiles, lift them off, and clear the whole stack. Every board can be solved.

Grandparents and grandchildren around a wooden table with a stacked mahjong solitaire layout, the girl lifting off two matching tiles while a calico cat watches Both ends are open — you can take it! Found another pair!

A new puzzle every day

Everyone in the world gets the same board today. Finish it, then share your time without spoiling the layout.

Always solvable

Boards are built backwards from a real solution, so there is always a way to clear them — even after a shuffle.

Hints and undo

Stuck? A hint lights up a pair that keeps the board solvable. Undo as many steps as you like.

Free, no download

Runs in any browser on phone, tablet or computer. No sign-up, nothing to install, and it keeps working offline once loaded.

How to play

One rule to learn, then it is all about spotting pairs.

  1. Which ones are free?

    1Look at the stack

All the tiles start face up, piled in layers. Bright tiles can be taken; dimmed ones are still blocked.

  2. This end is open!

    2Find a free tile

A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open.

  3. Two East winds!

    3Match a pair

Tap two identical free tiles and they leave the board. Any two flowers match, and so do any two seasons.

  4. All clear!

    4Clear the board

Keep pairing until no tile is left. Run out of moves? Shuffle the rest — it stays solvable.

Pick a board

Start with today's shared puzzle, or choose a layout for free play. Every deal is new and always solvable.

The rules in one minute

Bright tiles are free; dimmed tiles are blocked from above or on both sides.
  1. The board starts with every tile face up, stacked in layers.
  2. A tile is free when no tile lies on top of it, even partly, and it can slide out to the left or to the right.
  3. Remove two free tiles that are the same. The four flowers all match each other, and so do the four seasons.
  4. Clear every tile to win. If no pair is left, shuffle the remaining tiles or undo a few moves.
  5. Taking the top and the ends first usually opens up the most new tiles.

Which tiles match?

The set has 144 tiles: three suits from 1 to 9, winds, dragons, plus four flowers and four seasons. Most tiles need an exact twin; flowers and seasons only need to be from the same group.

Exact twins: same suit and number, same wind or dragon
Any two flowers match (plum, orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum)
Any two seasons match (spring, summer, autumn, winter)

FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. Play as much as you like in the browser. There is no sign-up and nothing to download.

Can every board be solved?

Yes. Each board is built backwards from a real solution, so a full clear always exists. You can still trap yourself by picking the wrong pairs — that is where undo and shuffle help.

What does "free tile" mean?

Nothing is on top of it and at least one side, left or right, is open. Tiles above or beside it that are still there keep it blocked.

How does the daily puzzle work?

Every day at midnight UTC a new board appears, the same for everyone. Your time and tiles left are kept on this device, and you can share the result as a short text.

Is this the same as mahjong?

It uses mahjong tiles, but it is a one-player matching puzzle — no hands, no scoring, no opponents. If you want to learn the four-player game, try the Mahjong Academy.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The board scales to your screen, and the Tower layout is made for phones held upright. You can also add it to your home screen like an app.
